Getting in Shape, Running and Cycling

Running Equivalent

For example, using this formula:
The 3000 meter Run record is 7:20 and the record time at Empire State
is 9:33. A champion runner would finish the extra 940 meters in
about 2:30 and added to the 7:20 = 9:50 almost identical to the stair
climb record time.

The 5000 meter Run record is 12:37 and the record time at Sears Tower
is 13:26. A champion runner might finish the extra 272 meters in
about 50 seconds and added to the 12:37 = 13:27 almost identical to
the stair climb record time.

So using this, if you have no access to many stairs, running about
5200 meters would be an approximate equivalent (13 times around a 400
meter track) for the Sears Tower race.

Cycling Equivalent

Number of stairs x 5 = approx. cycling equivalent It is kind of amazing how the "math" worked out so well, exactly 2.5 for the
running factor and exactly 5 for the cycling factor.

The only time this calculation does not work is for sprints. 100 meter Run
divided by 2.5 = just 40 stairs and I imagine the champion stair climbers
could do it in a few seconds, much less than the 9.77 record in the 100 meter
Run. But it works very well for middle to long distance races of Running, Cycling,
and Stair climbing.
