Message from the MSVFA Chair Cal Larson
The
Minnesota State Volunteer Firefighters Association welcomes all to the
association and our fluid website. MSVFA is committed to the
individuals concerns and needs at the local, state, and national level.
At the local level, we will help with your needs as a firefighter. At
the state and national level, we will work hard on issues that affect
volunteer and paid on call firefighters regarding legislation and
policy in the fire service.
This
has become necessary in Minnesota as the volunteer and paid on call
firefighters do not have a voice that is working specifically for the
largest portion of the fire service, YOU! 75% of the firefighters in
Minnesota are volunteer and paid on call individuals.
The
MSFDA directors worked hard to bring all the participants together as
the Chiefs had left for a period of time, and as a result Chiefs
throughout the state have now taken over the MSFDA board with 80% of
the directors being chiefs and four (4) being volunteers.
Please do not misunderstand, these are fine, intelligent, and respected individuals that do the best for their regions while serving as a director of the MSFDA. But this is not a fair division of representation of firefighters in Minnesota as 75% of the firefighters in Minnesota are volunteer, paid on call firefighters, and as such, the need for a individual volunteer, paid on call firefighter to have a voice in Minnesota has become imperative.
The Minnesota State Volunteer Firefighters Association was formed on July 4th 2007 to accomplish this task. The Board of the MSVFA has been working diligently to set up the MSVFA website to inform all about the organization and to begin to offer benefits for the MSVFA membership.
MSVFA has made all firefighters honorary members for the first year to have the ability to look at the benefits that are offered and to make an informed decision and have an organization that listens to you and acts on the concerns of the firefighters in Minnesota. YOU can implement change, and the MSVFA will be there to help.

A
reason for the Minnesota State Volunteer Firefighters Association to
request this NVFC Directors chair is that the MSFDA appointed
representative had to pay his own way out to the NVFC conference as the
MSFDA leadership did not want to pay for this important work to be
accomplished. MSVFA feels that
the national legislation for volunteer and paid on call firefighters
need to be a priority, always!!
The
federal legislation, that will affect the volunteer and paid on call
firefighters, are being championed by the National Volunteer Fire
Council (NVFC) are the elimination of the taxes
on retirement benefits for firefighters and Minnesota has key authors
on this legislation. This is the most important legislation for
volunteer and paid on call in the history of the fire service.
Again,
welcome to the MSVFA.
